After viewing Aronofsky's impressive "Black Swan", I was inspired to revisit a couple of other performance art themed thrillers such as Dario Argento's classic "Suspiria" and the equally satisfying "Opera". I hope you enjoy this multi-media manip I worked up in homage.

'SAW' on a Budget!

A couple of weeks before Halloween 2008, I was trying to come up with an idea for a costume for a friend of mine, when I came across a 'Jigsaw' mask someone had made themselves for pretty much next to nothing.

I have been a fan of the 'Saw' films for quite some time, mostly because of the intricate traps and grisly murder set pieces, so I wondered how I may be able to imitate one of those on the cheap and by October 31st.

My friend Trina accepted her role as 'Amanda' and my work began.

Using only cardboard, craft glue, some PVC piping, popsicle sticks, screws and paint, I created the trap pictured below. I made use of various items I already had laying arond the crypt, so in the end, I spent only a couple of dollars to bring it to life!

Earlier this month, during the annual Cinema Wasteland 2007 Spring show, I scored a rather impromptu interview with genre star Camille Keaton, best known for her role as Jennifer Hills in 1978's infamous Meir Zarchi outing "I Spit On Your Grave" a.k.a "Day of the Woman". She won the Best Actress award for her role in that film at the 1978 Catalonian International Film Festival in Spain. Six years prior, Camille appeared in the soon to be released Riccardo Freda film; "The Tragic Ceremony". In this Euro-Cult rarity she plays Jane, one of four hippies taking refuge from a summer storm in the seemingly abandoned Villa Alexander...unaware that their hosts are staging a satanic sacrifice. When the ceremony ends in a blood-soaked orgy of violence, the hippies flee the villa...only to find themselves accused of committing a Manson-style massacre. (Look for it this Fall from Dark Sky Films in a pristine transfer from the original elements for the first time ever in North America.) Die-hard fans will also know her from her first role, a bit part in the "black glove" Giallo thriller "What Have You Done to Solange?" (A personal favorite.) I couldn't pass up this rare opportunity to speak with the star of one of the most contorversial films ever released! The one that Roger Ebert dubbed "the worst movie ever made" (What the Hell does he know, anyway?!); the one that made me cry "UNCLE!" and curl into a fetal position beneath my sweat soaked covers! ~Hey, I was only 11. Despite her busy weekend schedule, she made time to share a few words with me between her convention obligations. If you haven't watched this one in a while, then I urge you to pick up The Special "Millenium Edition" from Anchor Bay and give it another viewing with the Joe Bob Briggs Commentary, it's an insightful look into a film the majority of critics dismiss as "exploitative trash". We know better though, don't we, fiends? For those of you who haven't seen this one yet, then I highly recommend that you do, just keep repeating... It's only a movie... It's only a movie... It's only a movie!

Johnny Ho-Tep (Interview quickie extroadinaire): So, Camille; how did you land the part of Jennifer Hills in "Day of the Woman"?

Camille Keaton: "Well, I got the part through "Backstage" in New York. I went and auditioned and kept auditioning, alongside other actresses, then eventually they called me and told me that I had gotten the part."

Ho-Tep: I think that fans of the horror genre remember you best as Jennifer from "I Spit On Your Grave", but what is your most memorable role? Also, for fans of yours who only know you from that role, which of your films would you recommend that they see next?

Camille: "Oh, Madeleine. Madeleine from 1974; Anatomia di un Incubo; which, in English means "Anatomy of a Nightmare". I think that is my favorite film, but it's hard for me to say, I like it for certain reasons. Also "What Have You Done to Solange?", I don't have much screen time, but it's a great who-dun-it; I highly recommend that one, it was my first part. I would also recommend "The Tragic Ceremony" which should hopefully be coming out this Fall sometime."

Ho-Tep: There's been an influx recently of seventies inspired horror and exploitation flicks, which of these in your opinion has done the grindhouse sub-genre justice?

Camille: "Hmm...Hostel! Yes, Hostel, I really liked that movie!"

Ho-Tep: Do you feel, what with all the remakes coming out these days that audiences would be ready for "I Spit On Your Grave" this time around or do you feel that it just could not be remade?

Camille: "I don't think "I Spit On Your Grave" would be remade. I just can't see that happening, I don't think it could be remade."
